Hi everyone! If I can figure out how to do it, this will be the first post you see when you encounter this blog's main page. This will also be one of the few unlocked posts--see below for more details.
So. Most of you probably know me. My name is Jonathan L. Miller and this blog will be devoted to the development of a kind of crazy idea I had the other day. See, I'd been thinking lately about the idea of a tabletop roleplaying game for people well outside the normal gamer milieus. I'd toyed with the idea of a "Romance novel RPG," but I realized it wasn't really feasible as a group activity. Then, during a break from my job, it hit me. Who is an author loved by many (including me), whose ideas could be perfect for a group game that could be perfect for both veteran and novice gamers alike?
Jane Austen! Of course!
I've wanted to try designing a game for ages, and this project just seemed so appealing. The trick, of course, is to make it close enough to the source material to evoke the feel, but not so close that the scenarios just reenact the books. (Although I'll probably use them as examples in designs, I don't foresee people playing Elizabeth Bennett or Marianne Dashwood, for example.) Anyway, I broached the whole idea on Facebook, but realized that a blog would be a much better way to "think out loud" and possibly get some feedback when requested. (Of course, sometimes I won't want feedback--but I'll be sure to let you all know!)
And yes, most posts on this blog will be locked--this is IP I'm developing and, if it works, I'm hoping to do something with it. That being said, if you know me, or are a friend of a friend (real friend or DW friend), shoot me a request. If I understand this stuff correctly, you don't even need a DW account; you can register an OpenID thing to see stuff. I think. If you can't (I'm sure someone will let me know), I'll figure something else out.
So, here we are! Join me while I design my first game! I hope!
